"Backup -- whoah, Backup, slow down, boy --" Veronica Mars barely has a chance to react to how fast the young and spritely pitbull is running, considering that she's holding the leash that is attached to the collar that suddenly and unexpectedly warps.

This is something other.

It's cold, which Neptune wasn't, and it's cloudy, which Neptune wasn't, but with a sunny glare, which is very Neptune.

In fact, the only thing that even remotely reminds Veronica of Neptune is that sunny glare.

I guess aiming for normal was a little further off than I thought. But where did all of this come from?

"Hello?" she calls, Backup barking loudly enough to echo.

This barren pavement square echos?

Not a smart thing to do, Mars. Slow down, hold up -- whatever form of total weirdness it is, stop screaming and hang on to reality.

Veronica slows down, holds up, and hangs on to Backup's leash, instead.

And they walk.

[OOC: Yay first post! There's something kind of, um. I am not sure. Amusing about a teenager from California and a dog being the first people there, but -- well. :D!]

Eventually, Veronica may encounter a female walking, bewildered. She might need to become used to people making such faces.

It's about to become Veronica's most social day, isn't it.

Just because she's the one with the computer! Or the Big Dog. Or, perhaps, because she's been walking around with Backup for what feels like forever, and they've found nothing but empty space.

"Miss?" Veronica asks, catching up to her, "excuse me, miss, are you lost?"

It takes a moment for Kate to realize someone's speaking to her. When she does, she tightens her shirt more and says, "Yes."

"I hate to say 'join the club,'" she says, shrugging, "but it's turning into one. Honestly, I was hoping you wouldn't be. Or someone wouldn't, at any rate."

Because this is weird, man. This is the uncomfortable getting weird sort of weird.

"Haven't run across any of those kinds of people yet."

"'Those kinds of people'?"

"Who know where this is, because it isn't part of my usual repertoire, walking my dog, turning a corner and boom, nuclear winter wonderland."

Beat.

"Or else that's what it looks like, from my end."

"We're the only ones here as far as I know."

Kate gives the locale a good scan to justify her statement.

"Maybe we should look for shelter."

That, it occurs to Veronica, could be a very sensible plan.

Almost more sensible than the one she'd think of -- to wander around, calling things out until someone noticed her, or the other option of wandering around clandestinely.

She did find a person, though.

"Yeah, when we were walking about we just saw a bunch of old shacks, but looking at the state of this place, we could be getting acid rainshower any minute."

"Did they have roofs?"

[info]usedtobeone

January 7 2006, 03:04:09 UTC 6 years ago

"Mostly. There seem to be little cave-ins everywhere, and I'm starting to feel like I've just walked on to a set of a bad horror movie. Though usually there's some kind of haven in places like that."

Like the mall.

Where's the mall?

"An entire roof? Would probably take building, unless there's something underground."

"You say it could rain at any time. Don't you want to be covered from that kind of pollution?"

The girl might be joking. For obvious reasons, Kate's not in the mood to laugh.

Well, duh.

"Yes. Would anyone want to walk directly into it? I'm thinking that underground is the best place before the weather's figured out, and --"

Cell phone.

Veronica Mars, you have a cell phone!

Quickly, the statement is dropped and the Sidekick is pulled out.

"Does that thing work?" she asks quickly.

[info]usedtobeone

January 7 2006, 03:33:08 UTC 6 years ago

"It works as in yes, it turns on. A signal, I'm not so sure --"

Veronica stares at the Sidekick.

Well, it's not getting a phone signal, but ...

Silently, she holds up the screen, which has a complete GPS layout of wherever they are, complete with 'you are here' dot.

In some form of Chinese.

"... looks like this place has been mapped, at least."

Not that it's helpful, unless there are Chinese people around.

"...so we're in a post-apocalyptic China?" she asks, breathless and confused.

[info]usedtobeone

January 7 2006, 03:43:20 UTC 6 years ago

"I have absolutely no idea."

It's rare that Veronica Mars admits that, but when she does, it doesn't mean she isn't counting on getting one later.

"This isn't the right climate for China -- of course I'm thinking of my China, and if I started to suddenly have a belief in the possibility of time travel, right now may just be the time it manifests."

[info]dont_run_kate

January 7 2006, 03:46:19 UTC 6 years ago

"Your China?"

[info]usedtobeone

January 7 2006, 04:02:36 UTC 6 years ago

"If this is after some kind of nuclear war, it's not going to be the China I saw when I was five, now, is it? Climatewise, at least. Definitely not."

Veronica bites her lip briefly, thinking.

"Of course, Chinese is a widely-spoken language. It could just be some kind of universal tongue."

I'm talking like this is a normal experience for me.

"Yeah."

This girl was very strange.

Snarky, quirky Mars-Wan Kenobi.

"For what, I don't know. But it's possible. And at least this is sort of a functional map. We know that we're the red dot, anyway."
